This practical, step-by-step manual, with an exceptional design by Hofmann, informs and illustrates his design philosophy and methodical approach to graphic design problem solving with sections devoted to: The Dot, The Line, Confrontation (encounters between dissimilar elements such as form and lettering) and Letters and Signs (new forms of expression). 

A Preface by George Nelson with a considered Introduction and section introductions by Hofmann. Featuring (301) black and white illustrations (most with succinct captions) from Hofmann, other professionals and students taken from studies executed in the Graphic Course (Fachklasse) at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule (AGS) in Basle where Hofmann has taught since 1947.

Photographs by Max Mathys, Rolf Schröter, Esther and Paul Merkle, Photoklasses AGS and Hans Isenschmid. An essential book from the eminent and inimitable Swiss designer and educator who continues to influence.      

A nearly fine white hardcover cloth in its’ good jacket with toned to the back. A large and a few small tears with creases to the front of the jacket including a small chip to the upper left corner. Despite any jacket flaws, still a solid copy. Interior pages clean and unmarked. Always highly recommended!
