Typography by Aaron Burns, 1961. Reinhold Publishing Corporation, New York. oversized, 10 x 14.25, 112 pp. Printed is USA.

“To typographers, designers and students. To all those whose love of beautiful typography sustains and encourages skilled contemporary craftsmanship. And especially to those typographers who care enough to uphold the traditions of their craft, who constantly pursue perfection.”

Main texts include: Preface by Aaron Burns, Introduction, Typographic Design, Exposures, Critique of Exposures*, Suggested Working Habits for the Student and Refinement Suggestions (re: spacing,  alignment, punctuation, underscores, typographic refinements, text setting, ragged lines, initials, selecting and combining typefaces, and leading).

*For the Critique of Exposures, Burns includes commentary for many of the typographic examples, pointing out conceptual and technical details (even imperfect typography) including typefaces used. This alone makes this book a valuable addition to your library.

Additionally, there's a Dedication, Acknowledgments, About the Author, List of Designers and a Typeface Index (64 listed). Heavily illustrated with more than (50) mostly black and white examples of modern typographic solutions by but not limited to: Brownjohn, Chermayeff & Geismar, Aaron Burns, Herb Lubalin, Karl Gerstner, Herbert Matter, Paul Rand, Lou Dorfsman, Bob Gill, Helen and Gene Federico, Yves Zimmermann (Geigy!), George Lois and more.

At the time of this publication, Aaron Burns was President and Director of Graphic Arts Typographers. Inc, one of the leading consultants in typographic design. He taught Advanced and Experimental Typographic Design at Pratt Institute and organized numerous events at the Type Directors Club in New York City.

A very good black cloth hardcover with foxing early and late and sunned top and bottom edges. An uncommon, very good dust jacket with small chips and tears along the folds, edges and corners.
