Typographische Gestaltung by Jan Tschichold, 1935. 1st ed., Benno Schwabe & Co., Basel, Switzerland. 6.25 x 8.5, pp. 112 including trade advertising (perhaps designed by Tschichold) with text in German. Design and typography by Jan Tschichold.

Two years after his arrival in Switzerland (from Germany), Tschichold published his second handbook devoted to modern typography and graphic design. In this volume he continues to advocate for the meaning and goals of “Die neue Typographie” yet less rigorous and more practical and without political undertones; he was now thirty years young; practiced combining typefaces and even set the book in Bodoni with the slab serif City by Georg Trump.

Preface by Tschichold (Basel, June 1935) and twenty-three topics discussed: historical survey, criticism of ornamental typography, the meaning and aim of the new or functional typography, hand and machine typesetting, the word, the line, emphasis in the line, leading, length of lines and grouping, standardization, tables, indentation and line endings, the use of space, rules, colors, paper, posters, richness of form, concrete art, typography, photography and drawing and the book today and more.

Illustrated throughout with black and white and color examples with some printed on a variety of papers throughout by: Tschichold, Giambattista Bodoni, Wladyslaw Strzeminski, Max Bill, El Lissitzky, Josef Albers, Friedel Vordemberge-Gildewart, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Herbert Bayer, Zdenek Rossmann, Ladislav Sutnar, Walter Cyliax and others.

A very good plus blue cloth hardcover with light wear to the covers, corners and printed paper spine label. Without the scarce original dust jacket. A small Wittenborn Art Books label on the inside rear cover. Interior pages are tightly bound and clean.
