Typografische Monatsblätter / Swiss Typographic Monthly Magazine [Helmut Schmid]

Typografische Monatsblätter / Schweizer Grafische Mitteilungen / Revue suisse de l’imprimerie / Swiss Typographic Monthly Magazine: Journal for Typographic Composition, Design, Communication, Printing and Production edited by Jean-Pierre Graber, No. 1, 1989. Printing and Paper Union of Switzerland, Zurich. 9 x 11.75, 32 pp. plus advertising with German, French and English text. Designed by Helmut Schmid.

Presenting a 28-page illustrated article titled “Typografie” by Helmut Schmid. With an introductory text on the author’s typography philosophy: “To me, typography means the act of exposing that design which is already inherent in the problem.” Illustrated with examples and explanatory texts featuring: packaging, advertisements, greeting cards, compositional study, record jacket, journal cover, announcement, printed folder, Japanese typeface, logotype, stationary, and visual identity.

One of Switzerland's most important journals, TM provided a platform for education and critical discussions about technology and the trade with experimental and iconic covers expressing specific design ideologies and attitudes. Ultimately, the journal helped spread the influence and emerging developments of Swiss graphic design and typography to international audiences. Near fine with light wear to the front white cover and corners.
