This special edition is devoted exclusively to Paul Rand and his work and is divided into two sections; which “side by side provide an interesting profile of Rand and invite individual analysis and comparison.”

Following a thoughtful Introductory text by Michael Corey, the first section features (12) full page color examples of Rand’s work: Thoughts on Design (1946), the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Direction magazine, Westinghouse, the IBM World’s Fair, New York Art Directors Club, The Dada Painters and Poets dust jacket (1951), Aspen Design Conference (1961), etc.. Each image is accompanied by short descriptive texts — this alone makes the edition worthwhile.

In addition to Rand’s own work, the second section features (5) reproductions of art works from Rand’s personal collection including: Fernand Leger, Hans Arp, Paul Klee, El Lissitzky, and Coptic Weaving. “Paul Rand, who is also a painter, believes that graphic art is rooted in fine art and the same factors that affect the development of art movements affect graphic design. To a large measure, this is caused by the fact that painters and graphic designers share similar problems aesthetically and psychologically.”
