Featuring several important and early published American illustrated articles related to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and The New Bauhaus, American School of Design, Chicago, Illinois, founded by The Association of Arts and Industries in 1937. Additional articles related to Chicago design: Society of Typographic Arts, 11th Annual Exhibition of Design in Printing, Photography in Advertising and more.

  • “A New Instrument of Vision” by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, a 4-page article discussing photography and its influence on the modern age. Illustrated with four of his photographs. “... the realization that a knowledge of photography is just as important as that of the alphabet. The illiterates of the future will be ignorant of the use of the camera and pen alike.”
  • The above is followed by a shorter tribute: “Moholy-Nagy and The New Bauhaus” by William A. Kittredge (Director of Design and Typography for Lakeside Press; under R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company) and includes two illustrated images; a negative “Cat” print and an abstract photogram.
  • A 12-page school prospectus for The New Bauhaus, American School of Design designed by Moholy-Nagy is produced in full with photographic covers featuring information re: the school's founding and history, Educational Program (curriculum diagram, courses, etc.), Faculty and Advisers (Dr. Walter Gropius, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, James J. Sweeney, Hin Bredendieck, George Kepes), Information, Calendar and more. This is the school’s first course catalog outlining the four-year curriculum.

Very good or better with light wear to the glazed covered boards. The twisted plastic coil binding has a few broken pieces along the bottom and makes some of the pages a little hard to turn. Excellent reference and historical material related to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy’s The New Bauhaus in Chicago. Highly recommended!
