Packaging: An International Survey, 1968 [Wim Crouwel, Kurt Weidemann]

Packaging: An International Survey, edited by Wim Crouwel and Kurt Weidemann, 1968. Frederick A. Praeger, Inc., New York. 11 x 8.75, pp. 186. English, German, French and Spanish text. Printed in West Germany. Jacket design by Wim Crouwel/Total Design.

Packaging presents nearly 500 examples of international, modern packaging design, accompanied by explanatory captions. Incudes pharmaceutical boxes, packing for furniture, food containers and luxury gifts – the scope is very wide and embraces everyday items. From Crouwel‘s introduction: “Slowly but surely the packaging of a product has acquired almost magical powers: it has become a ‘hidden persuader’ and can sell itself in the supermarket. It has thus progressed far beyond its original job of protecting the contents and taken on a number of important new functions.” With a useful Index of Designers, Clients, Agencies and Photographers at the back.

A very good hardcover with light wear and a stain to the blue cloth corners. Binding tight, interior pages clean, previous price stamped on the first printed page. In the original, worn dust jacket with a 3” tear to the front top and a 6” split to the lower spine with tape repair. Paper loss along the top corner and spine head with moderate wear, scuffs and soiling to the covers. Now in protective archival mylar.
