Neuentdeckt: 5 Garnituren Haenel Schrift [Walter Cyliax]

Neuentdeckt: 5 Garnituren Haenel Schrift, 1935. Gebrüder Klingspor, Schriftgiesserei, Offenbach am Main, Germany. 8.25 x 10.875, pp. 32 with text in German (some type points in English). Printed in Germany. Design by Walter Cyliax (1899–1945).

A rare, original Walter Cyliax designed type specimen introducing five new sets of Haenel type (originally published in c. 1830) by Eduard Haenel (1804–1856), the Berlin-based type founder and book printer. With a short introduction and specimen pages for: Haenel-Antiqua, Haenel-Kursiv, Schmale fette Haenel-Antiqua, Fette Haenel-Antiqua and Fette Haenel-Kursiv. The remaining twenty pages showcase the typeface in use; surrounded by the modern designs of Cyliax. Beautifully printed in full color using photography and illustrations.

Walter Cyliax was a pioneer of the photographic poster and eventually after moving to Switzerland (born in Leipzig) became the art director for the important Zurich printer, Fretz Brothers. Cyliax was an influential figure in promoting the New Photography and used the magazine Typographische Monatsblätter as a platform to educate printers while advancing modern graphic design in Switzerland.

A very good wire, spiral-bound specimen with a die-cut front cover. Light wear to the edges and a small tear to the top of the binding and the cover pulled from approx. six spirals at the bottom. Interior is nearly fine with moderate foxing from the die cut, a bookseller’s pencil notations and a previous owner’s stamp on three pages: “Vertegenwoordigers Van Randwijk’s Grafische Machine- en Materialenhandel, Dordrecht”.
