Lettering on Architecture by Alan Bartram, 1976 [Whitney Library of Design]

Lettering on Architecture by Alan Bartram. Whitney Library of Design, New York, USA, 1976, 1st American ed., 8.5 x 10.5, pp. 176. Design by Alan Bartram.

From the dust jacket flap: The incorporation of lettering into the architectural pattern of a building is a practice with a long and honorable history. This book shows, with (300) large black and white illustrations, how lettering has traditionally been used in architecture and indicates the range of remarkably flexible and subtle letterforms that are available and suitable for use by architects today (i.e. 1975).

All examples are drawn from Italy and Britain and represent more than (35) different categories (i.e. Italian Baroque, Egyptians, Metal Lettering, Art Nouveau, Later Ceramics, Influence of the Modern Movement, etc.). Along with commentary, they explain the differences of letterforms, of architectural requirements and preferences, and of materials. Additionally, the author examines ways lettering and architectural styles relate to one another as well as the need for letterforms to be developed for specific architectural preferences. With a Preface, Bibliography, Glossary, Index of Illustrations and General Index.

A very good hardcover cloth and original dust jacket; both with only light wear. Interior pages unmarked with a solid binding.
