Ladislav Sutnar : Visual Design in Action by Noel Martin [Poster]

Ladislav Sutnar: Visual Design in Action, exhibition poster, 1961. AIGA, NY, USA. 18 x 29, heavy weight, coated Champion paper. Design attributed to Noel Martin (1922–2009).

The American Institute of Graphic Arts presents “Sutnar : visual design in action”, an exhibition on view — free at the Pepsi-Cola Exhibition Gallery, 500 Park Avenue, NY, August 2 to 30 [Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 6 pm] originated by The Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, in cooperation with Champion Papers of Hamilton, Ohio. This major exhibition coincided with the publishing of Sutnar's 1961 landmark book, “Visual design in action—principles, purposes.” Martin's richly printed black and white poster design featuring Sutnar's experimental visual symbol nearly imitates the books dust jacket.

Lesser-known than his contemporaries, Noel Martin was a self-taught graphic designer, typographer and educator, notable for his modern museum graphics (Cincinnati Art Museum and Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center), industrial trade catalogs and minimalist logos. Martin was a well-respected member of Sutnar's small circle of friends and in 1953 included in “Four American Designers,” a graphic design exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, along with Herbert Bayer, Leo Lionni, and Ben Shahn.

A fine, uncirculated original poster. Poster will shipped flat.
