Karl Gerstner: Review of 5 x 10 Years of Graphic Design etc. by Karl Gerstner, edited by Manfred Kröplien, 2001. Hatje Cantz, Germany. English edition, 9.375 x 11.75, pp. 256. Printed in Germany. Highly recommended!
The definitive book on one of the foremost Swiss graphic designers, Karl Gerstner (1930–2017), where he recounts his 50 years of active work as a graphic designer. The ups and downs of his professional life are vividly illustrated with samples of work, both realized and rejected. Richly illustrated with (650) mostly color works, many printed large with detailed and thoughtful captions ... ”not how it should be done, but rather how he [Gerstner] did it.”
With a Foreword by the editor, and the remaining text by Gerstner: Two Preludes (a Lecture presented at the annual conference of Swiss Art Historians, Zürich, 1988 and Prelude to the Beginning) including (5) chapters and (2) intermezzos: The Fifties: Storm and Stress, The Sixties: GGK, Intermezzo I: Visual Language, The Seventies: Solo Again, Intermezzo II: A Short Typology of Logos and Labels, The Eighties: Corporate Identities, The Nineties: Odd-Job Designer and an Encore (Good Design – What is it? and The Art Director) and Acknowledgements.
A very good hardcover cloth with light wear and two slightly bumped front cover corners; the spine is lightly shaken/cocked but all pages are intact and nothing is loose. The red colored headband is frayed. In its' original very good dust jacket with light handling and wear to the to edge.
