Gebrauchsgraphik: International Advertising Art [H.K. Frenzel; O.H.W. Hadank]

Gebrauchsgraphik: International Advertising Art (Monthly Magazine for Promoting Art in Advertising) edited by H.K. Frenzel & Engelbrecher, Sixteenth Volume, Number 7, 1939. Berlin, Germany. 9.25 x 12.25, pp. 50 plus trade advertising with German and English text.

This special issue was published in honor of Professor O.H.W. Hadank’s fiftieth birthday. It includes an editors introduction and multiple contributors. Profusely illustrated with black and white and color and specialty printed pages bound-in featuring: business cards, posters, trademarks, book covers, advertisements, extensive packaging and more. The most complete illustrated article on Hadank’s work that I’m aware of and the issue that introduced Paul Rand to Hadank’s expertly crafted lettering.

“Although he worked in a classical manner, Hadank rejected both antiquated and kitsch tropes. Hadank’s work was not particularly “modern” looking; it was the essence of graphic elegance that the likes of Paul Rand believed influenced modern practice. He valued Hadank’s complex compositions because they exhibited a mastery of his craft and materials yet reserved special appreciation for Hadank’s purity as a typographer, letterer and illustrator.” — Steven Heller, 2015.

Very good with only light handling and wear mostly to the spine tips and a few late advertising pages.
