Design with Type by Carl Dair [1967, Hardcover with Jacket]

Design with Type by Carl Dair, 1967. University of Toronto Press, Toronto, Canada. 7.25 x 8.25, 164 pages. Hardcover with decorated boards and and matching dust jacket. An earlier version containing part of the material in this book was published in 1952 by Pellegrini & Cudahy, New York.

Fourteen years after the first published edition, this new edition includes many rewritten texts by Dair to include discussions of current typographic trends and possible developments resulting from technological changes.

Preface by Carl Dair. With (15) Chapters introducing the reader to some early typographic developments and the elements of typography including: the individual and combination of letters, words, lines and the mass of text. Followed by more practical chapters concerned with the basic principles of design and a detailed look at possible type contrasts (i.e. contrasts of size, weight, structure, form, color, direction, texture, space and more) and their applications with books, advertising, magazines and information data. New chapters have been added to discuss various schools of typography (i.e. order vs. disorder).

Heavily illustrated throughout in black and red with over (150) uncommon examples. The book finishes with an Epilogue, Bibliography, Appendix and Colophon. The back of the jacket includes accolades on the book’s 1st edition as well as Dair’s other recent writings. Overall, an informative and valued reference.

A nearly fine hardcover in its original very good lightly rubbed dust jacket with some small chips and creases along the corners and edges. Interior pages unmarked. Better than other copies we've seen!
