Design Quarterly 123: A Paul Rand Miscellany edited by Mildred Friedman, No. 123, 1984. Published by the MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts for the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. 8.5 x 11, pp. 34. Graphic Design by Robert Jensen; Guest Designer and Author: Paul Rand with an excellent wrap-around cover design!

A Paul Rand Miscellany was published as an abbreviated volume for his 1985 release, A Designer’s Art. It embodies “all the attitudes and qualities that have made this designer’s work consistently fresh, insightful and stimulating to the eye and mind.” — Mildred Friedman

With collected essays, quotes and richly illustrated pages featuring many of Rand’s influences and references as well as his own work: ABC, IBM, Westinghouse, AIGA, and others. Sections include: Editor’s Introduction, Giorgio Vasari, Art for Art’s Sake, Paul Cézanne, Maurice Denis, Typography, Color, The Trademark, Stripes, Repetition, The Mask, The Rebus and On Teaching Design (Formulating the Problem or Assignment ...).

“One of the objectives of the designer who deals with type matter involves readability. Unfortunately, however, this function is often taken too literally and overemphasized at the expense of style, individuality, and the very effectiveness of the printed piece itself. By carefully arranging type areas, spacing, size, and color, the typographer is able to impart ... a quality that helps to dramatize the contents.” (Rand, 1985, pp. 149, 158)

A nearly fine stapled journal with yellow end-papers, showing only a hint of wear to the uncoated black and grey covers.
