Das Schweizer Plakat 1900–1984 [The Swiss Poster]. Edited by Hans Hartmann and Rolf Thalmann, Museum für Gestaltung, Zürich. 8.5 x 11.75, 50 pp., German text. Layout by Hans Hartmann. Cover design by Wolfgang Weingart.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held on January 24 to March 11, 1984 at the Gewerbemusuem, Basel, Switzerland. With a Foreword by Hartmann and sections covering: Tourism, Culture, Public Engagement, Politics, Consumer Goods and Sports. Illustrated with (34) colored posters and a (378) poster exhibition list.
To be honest, there are more comprehensive books about the history of Swiss posters but this superb Weingart cover is hard to beat. The front cover design is a variation of Weingart’s L’affiche Suisse, das Schweizer Plakat 1900 - 1983 ... with interchanged color separations, new typography and added or deleted elements.
“My posters have two distinguished characteristics: an irregular, wide border that holds the individual images together, framing the composite picture, and rough, fragmented dot screens. The low resolution of the screen reveals the photomechanical process.” — My Way to Typography, Weingart, 2000
A nearly fine, bright softcover exhibition catalog with only light marks to covers.
