Chermayeff & Geismar Trademarks, 1979. Chermayeff & Geismar Associates, New York, NY. 1st ed., with a small “Copy Number 589” label attached to the inside lower-left hand corner of the last page, 8.5 x 11.75, n.p. (152). A thoughtful design and production with a variety of stocks. Printed in New York by the Crafton Graphic Company, Inc., who C&G designed the logo for.

Trademarks is the studio’s promotional monograph and was sent to existing and potential clients and more. The lavishly produced book includes (95) corporate trademarks for large and small corporations, cultural institutions, government agencies, national celebrations and more. Client works featured range from over the years and include but not limited to: Chase Manhattan Bank, Mobil Corporation, The American Film Institute, The American Revolution Bicentennial Symbol, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Xerox Corporation, Waterside Housing Development, National Symphony Orchestra, The Museum Of Modern Art New York 50th Anniversary Symbol, The New York Stock Exchange and many more. Some are shown opposite to one another while others display supporting illustrations which point to the larger identification program (i.e. a photograph featuring the signage or packaging). A detailed Index and Acknowledgements page is printed at the back.

From the Ivan Chermayeff and Tom Geismer introduction “... each design, while simple in form, is the culmination of a complex process we believe in. That process can be outlined as: — listening objectively to the problem as described by the client; — reviewing and evaluating that description against past performances and future intentions; — defining an attitude or direction from which design development can begin; — creating a series of design possibilities, continually sifting out the merely fashionable; — presenting a proposed design by demonstrating its effectiveness within the context in which it will eventually appear; — developing guidelines and specifications for implementation; — helping to establish police protection against pressures, both external and internal, that tend to diminish effectiveness.”

A fine, uncirculated copy in its’ original, custom-made white cardboard shipping box. The back is a bit tight to the wire binding and doesn't lay perfectly even.
