This extensive handbook deals with the technique and design elements of typographic production. With a short introduction by Josef Müller-Brockmann and a text contribution titled “Craft and Art” by Paul Rand.

Chapters by the author are devoted to: planning of text, typesetting production, typographic elements, formal aspects (contrasts, proportions, rhythm, variations, etc.), working principles, and the development of type forms. The book culminates with applied typography examples; a heavily illustrated section with black and white and color examples from Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Germany and U.S.A.; books, magazines, brochures, advertisements, posters, packaging and stationary. Part of the excellent ABC Verlag series.

A good glazed hardcover with moderate wear along the edges and some of the glazed laminate starting to peel. Binding tight and interior pages clean. An alternative to the more expensive dust jacket edition.
