FUSE, 1991-2000 edited by Neville Brody and Jon Wozencroft. Published by FSI GmbH, FontShop International, and Research Publishing. Conceived and designed Neville Brody.

FUSE was an innovative experimental typography and design publication launched in 1991 by British graphic designer Neville Brody and art director and writer Jon Wozencroft. As a magazine and a digital type foundry, FUSE challenged conventions of visual communication through radical type design and theory. Leading international designers contributed radical fonts which were distributed via diskette (and later CD-ROM). It was a groundbreaking publication that explored the intersection of technology, design, language, and visual culture in the digital age. Through its provocative use of graphics, in both tangible and digital forms, FUSE was ahead of its time and continues to influence how typefaces are designed. This collection includes:

  • FUSE, Issue 1, Summer 1991: four A2 posters with their accompanying experimental fonts (on diskette) designed by Phil Baines, Neville Brody, Malcolm Garrett, Ian Swift. One additional fold-out contains an introduction.
  • FUSE “FreeForm” Issue 10, Summer 1994: four A2 posters with their accompanying experimental fonts (on  diskette) designed by Neville Brody, John Critchley, Tobias Frere-Jones, Sylke Janetzky, Cornel Windlin, Jon Wozencroft. One additional poster contains introductory essay “Reading Typography Writing Language” by Paul Elliman.
  • FUSE “Echo” Issue 17, Summer 1997: four A2 posters with their accompanying experimental fonts (on  diskette) designed by Florian Heiss, Function, Pierre Di Sciullo, Anna-Lisa Schönecker, and one bonus font by Neville Brody. One additional poster contains an introduction.
  • FUSE “Secrets” Issue 18, Fall 2000: five A2 posters with their accompanying experimental fonts (on CD-ROM) designed by Jason Bailey, Matthew Carter, Bruce Mau, Jake Tilson, and one bonus font by Neville Brody.
