Karl Gerstner: Typographisches Memorandum / Typographical Memorandum / Memorandum Typographique by Karl Gerstner, Sondernummer February 1972. Zollikofer & Co. AG, Switzerland. 9 x 11.75, pp. 36 with German, English and French text. Designed by Karl Gerstner.
This is a special reprint of the same article that appeared in the seminal Swiss typography journal Typografische Monatsblätter, February 1972. Typographical Memorandum marks the end of Gerstner's typographical work; before he concentrated solely on art. Heavily illustrated with over (75) black and white works printed on grey stock and a German text introduction by Rudolf Hostettler; editor of the journal. Gerstner’s text and selected practical works are classified by four essentials: Typography and Language, Typography and Image, Typography and Surface, Typography and Sequence.
“From the typographical work we have chosen only those specimens in which typography and content form a special unity — in memory of the integral typography.” A thoughtful supplement to Gerstner’s recently published book “Compendium for Literates” which focuses on his typographical views and theories.
A very good or better journal with stiff, printed wrappers; slightly starting to pull (common with this volume). Light wear along the cover edge and a hint of soiling to the front cover — fresh and clean interior pages. Uncommon and highly recommended!
