Jean Widmer, a devotion to modernism: itinerary of a designer from Zurich to Paris, 2003. The Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography, The Cooper Union School of Art, New York, USA. 6.5 x 9.5, pp. 96. Designed by Philippe Apeloig.

Published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name held at the Herb Lubalin Study Center (NYC) February 24 to April 5, 2003. Excellent content including a Foreward by the school's Dean, Robert Rindler, Introduction by Curator, Philippe Apeloig, and A bird's-eye view of French graphic design since 1945 by Margo Rouard-Snowman. Lastly, a detailed discussion between Widmer and Apeloig. Catalog concludes with a Widmer's biography, notes on his design contemporaries and acknowledgments.

Not nearly as well known in the United States as other modernist designers, Swiss designer, Jean Widmer is “of similar significance to Paul Rand in terms of his integration of modernist concepts into graphic design.” Apeloig eloquently states: “Jean Widmer's style, or better yet, spirit, is singular: conceptual, spare, elegant, serious, utilitarian and, though rooted in an innate devotion to modernism, endlessly responsive to change.” Wonderful!

A very good embossed and spot varnished softcover with light soiling and handling mostly to the white front and back cover edges and spine. Interior clean and bright.
