Typography–USA, Forum: “What is new in American typography?”, The Type Directors Club of New York, 1959. 8.5 x 10.5, stapled, pp. 40. With it’s original “Introductory announcement” and “Question form” laid-in. Booklet designed by Ray Komai (1918–2010).

“Today, there are those who point at the exceptional vigor of American typographic design, and others who criticize the superficial and “effect catching” opportunism which has developed.” — Aaron Burns

This stapled booklet was prepared in conjunction with the forum Typography–U.S.A. held on Saturday, April 18, 1959 at the Hotel Biltmore in New York City. With a Preface by Aaron Burns, the Educational Chairman and Foreword “From where to where?” by Will Burtin, the Program Chairman and moderator of the panel discussion. “Objectives of the Type Directors Club” and Membership Lists are printed on the back inside cover. A significant document on the state of the new, emerging American typography and the individual expressions of leading designers of the period.

This booklet records the statements and individual points of view prepared by the following (17) designers each with a profile photo and biography: Saul Bass, Lester Beall, Louis Dorfsman, Alvin Eisenman, Gene Federico, William Golden, Morton Goldsholl, Allen F. Hurlburt, Robert M. Jones, George Krikorian, Matthew Leibowitz, Leo Lionni, Herb Lubalin, Paul Rand, Herbert Roan, Ladislav Sutnar and Bradbury Thompson. Wow!

A fine, original booklet with laid-in ephemera. Highly recommended!
