The Principles of Harmony and Contrast of Colors, 1967 [Faber Birren]

The Principles of Harmony and Contrast of Colors and Their Applications to the Arts with a Special Introduction and Explanatory Notes by Faber Birren, 1967. This edition is based on the first English edition of 1854 as translated from the first French edition of 1839 (De La Loi Du Contraste Simultane Des Couleuers). Reinhold Publishing Company, New York, Amsterdam and London, 1967. Printed and bound in Tokyo, Japan.

The English translation of the monumental masterwork by M. E. Chevreul, the renowned 19th century scientist and authority on color. Lavishly illustrated with 28 color plates, including 15 plates adapted from the original French edition, photographs of Gobelins tapestries and 8 full-page reproductions of Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist paintings. Numerous black and white plates depicting Chevreul’s career. An essential reference book on color!

An oversized and heavy, very good book with a damp stain to the cloth hardcover front/back, on the inside of the jacket and a few early wavy pages with a stain to the top and bottom edge. The complete dust jacket has some soiling and light edge wear, including some small tears and chips. Interior pages clean with a few bent tipped-in plates and some handling throughout. Despite any exterior flaws, still a very good copy.
