That’s Entertainment: The American Musical Film, 1976. The Fort Worth Art Museum, Texas, USA. 24 x 36, horizontal on paper. Design by Massimo Vignelli (Vignelli Associates).

Massimo Vignelli designed all the graphics for the 1976 season at the Fort Worth Art Museum. The graphic program included brochures, publications, and many calendars and announcement posters for the museum's events ... “structured to be done quickly, inexpensively, and through long-distance telephone calls.”

Vignelli designed a simple format of (4) columns with (3) horizontal information bands ... a thick black band for recognition, an information band for event details and a third band for an illustration or free, expressive photograph (i.e. Fred Astaire); one which extends beyond the grid to provide more visual interest. The typeface is Century Expanded. Of this design, Vignelli said, “We like this series of calendars and posters because they have strength, aren’t trendy and provide information effectively.”

Excellent! “... dancer Fred Astaire leaps across the surface in a series of still images. Vignelli has stopped the story arc at its peak, leaving it to the viewer to complete the action. By choosing the high point in the narrative (physically and metaphorically), Vignelli has amplified the sense of drama and movement.” — Ellen Lupton, How Posters Work, 2015

A very good plus poster with minor creases and abrasions along the corners and edges. This poster is included in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (Object ID 18734831). Poster will be rolled and shipped in tube.
