Planning for Industry, Art & Education: as executed by Pieter Brattinga, 1970. A. W. Bruna & Zoon, Utrecht, Netherlands. 7.5 x 10.5, pp. 192. English text. Printed in the Netherlands.

An excellent book (which deserves more attention) examining large-scale design projects in three areas: industry, art and education — successfully planned and carried out by Dutch designer and editor, Pieter Brattinga. Introductions by Louis Dorfsman, Vice-President of CBS, New York and Theo Crosby, Partner at Crosby, Fletcher & Forbes, London.

Heavily illustrated with over (150) black and white and color illustrations featuring a number of Brattinga’s projects: logos, books, exhibitions, Quadrat Prints for Steendrukkerij de Jong & Co. and perhaps his most well known exhibition posters for: Will Sandberg, Ikko Tanaka, Dick Bruna, Rob Roy Kelly, Herb Lubalin, Mies Van Der Rohe, Karl Gerstner, Piet Zwart, Nippon Design Center and many others.

Of note are the excellent historical photographs from many of the exhibitions curated by Brattinga at the Steendrukkerij de Jong & Co.; an experimental gallery designed by Wim Crouwel and Kho Liang le. Assembled throughout are newspaper and magazine articles, some quoted in full including the full text of better known Brattinga lectures re: education, design goals, planning and executing effectively — while teaching at Pratt Institue, Brooklyn, New York. The book concludes with a Biographical Chronology, and a List of Writings by and about Pieter Battinga.

A nearly fine white hardcover cloth and dust jacket with only a hint of wear. One folded page is loose from binding.
