An excellent publication featuring the experimental and typographical designs of Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman. With a Preface by Fridolin Müller, an Introduction by Peter F. Althaus and a Biography by Jan Martinet as an appendix. Heavily illustrated with a cropped portrait of Werkman by Nico Jesse made in 1943, and (79) black and white plates, one per page including (14) in color.

From the book: Werkman (1882–1945) began his career as a printer and ended as an artist. The craftsman became a creator of pictures. Born into a time of experimentation and new solutions for artistic expression, he brought forth a new art by means of the tools with which his profession had provided him. What others developed in form of collage, Werkman had achieved in this kind of printing with the juxtaposition of typographical materials.

Very good plus white glazed covered boards with minor discoloration to the covers, mostly along the margins. Only a hint of wear to the corners. Interior pages are clean and bright. This easily abused volume is well preserved!
