General Dynamics: Atoms for Peace — Six Postcards, c. 1955 [Erik Nitsche]

[Six Unused Postcards] General Dynamics: Atoms for Peace and Power for Peace, c. 1955. General Dynamics Corporation, New York, USA. 4.125 x 5.75, printed both sides on uncoated stock in Switzerland by Lithos R. Marsens, Lausanne.

Each postcard is a version of Eric Nitsche’s iconic posters which he designed between 1955-60 as Art Director of General Dynamics. Nitsche designed the first series in 1955; multilingual posters for Geneva’s International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy where the company was exhibiting. Others soon followed.

Due to the secrecy of General Dynamics projects (i.e. Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine), Nitsche steered clear from depicting anything too specific and instead relied on visionary representations using symbolic and abstract visuals.
