Design Exchange: Overseas Chinese Graphic Designers [Henry Steiner]

Design Exchange 7 : Overseas Chinese Graphic Designers edited by Wang Xu with Henry Steiner as Consultant, c. 1990. Design Exchange, Hong Kong, China. 11 x 14.75, pp. 48 with parallel Chinese and English text. Cover Photographer: Wingo Lee. Design by Wang Xu.

Uncommon. Introductory essay: Overseas Chinese Graphic Designs by Henry Steiner. “This issue presents six Chinese designers working in North America. Most were born there; two are recent arrivals. They are scattered around the continent, from New York and New Haven on the East Coast to Edmonton, San Francisco and Hawaii.”

Design Exchange features (6) graphic designers, each with six pages, a profile photograph, descriptive text and illustrated color works including: Clement Mok (San Francisco), Clarence Lee (Hawaii), Hoi L. Chu (New York), John C. Jay (New York), Min Wang (New Haven), and Wei Yew (Edmonton). The last profile focuses on Henry Steiner, a graphic designer born in Vienna, known as the “Father of Hong Kong Design” — who helped shaped Hong Kong’s visual landscape. Steiner’s excellent text is written by Massimo Vignelli, who said: “Steiner’s work was real and professional, not trendy.” News from the Design Exchange and a few trade advertisements towards the end.

A very good oversized, journal with light wear to the glossy covers, creases along the spine and lightly curled corners.
