Design and Form: The Basic Course at the Bauhaus

Design and Form: The Basic Course at the Bauhaus by Johannes Itten, translated by John Maas, 1965. Reinhold Publishing Corporation, New York. Second printing of the English translation, 8.5 x 11.25, pp. 190 with English text.

A landmark of modern art education written by the Bauhaus master and creator of the preliminary course (1919) which taught elementary design, composition, color and light. The 197 plates includes student work and detailed descriptions to help the reader understand art education. The book continues to be a practical book for art educators today. In an article on the Bauhaus (Architectural Review, August, 1957) H. Von Erffa states: Itten was our guiding spirit... the strongest personality at the Bauhaus... The teaching methods that Itten used in those early days, and which were partly his invention, are now widely used in the United States.”

A yellow cloth hardcover book in a still bright, nearly fine dust jacket with only a hint of wear and a small piece missing from the back cover. Heavy foxing on the early pages
