A Sign Systems Manual by Crosby/Fletcher/Forbes [Worn Dust Jacket]

A sign systems manual by Crosby/Fletcher/Forbes, in London, England, 1970. Praeger Publishers, New York and Washington. 8.75 x 10.75, pp. 76. Printed in the Netherlands by Drukkerij Reclame N.V., Rotterdam. Designed by Crosby/Fletcher/Forbes.

The first book of its kind (in 1970); this practical, step-by-step guide illustrates a system for designing, contracting and displaying signs. Heavily illustrated throughout with black and white (and a few color) typography, diagrams/symbols and photographs.

Excellent content devoted to: Type Alphabets (terminology, letter styles, letterforms, proportions); Sign Alphabets (display, sign and airport letters, airport alphabet); Measurement (unit measurement system, line spacing, margin spacing); Scale (panel, letter and message sizes); Layout (the arrow, typographic and panel layouts, symbols); Organization (sign classification, color coding, sign locations and fixings); and Production (unit spacing chart, specifications, reproduction, materials, sign schedules and type style rules). The final section shows actual Signage Programs including: British Rail, Schiphol Airport, Cunard QE2 Liner, International Business Machines, Mexico Olympics, NYC Planning Department and more. A valuable manual for designers interested in signage, typography and standardization.

A good hardcover with wear to the spine including a 1” piece removed from the top and a split along the entire back. In its’ poor, dust jacket with large pieces missing, creases and tears. Despite this, a still bright white copy with clean, unmarked pages. A sought-after, hard-to-find title.
