World Seminar: Ideas Directions Points of View, Type Directors Club of New York, 1958. 8.5 x 10.75, 12 pp. plus stapled wrappers and blue endpapers. Designed by Robert Sutter.
Rare. Sponsored by the Type Directors Club of New York, the First International Seminar on typographic design was held at the Silvermine Artists Guild in southern Connecticut on April 26, 1958, and the exhibition “The Art and Science of Typography” at the World Affairs Center, New York City on the evenings of April 28–29. See the poster here and here.
Prepared after the seminar and exhibition, this slim booklet features a short text from the opening address given by Will Burtin. With seminar and exhibition details and many excerpts by or about the panel of internationally renowned designers (not all are credited) which included: Otl Aicher, Will Burtin, Max Huber, Yusaku Kamekura, Lester Beall, Bruce MacKenzie, Willem Sandberg, Herbert Spancer, Freeman Craw, Egbert Jacobson, Noel Martin, R. Hunter Middleton, Cipe Pineles and others. Illustrated with small black and white profile thumbnails and in-situ photographs from the seminar.
A very good, original 1958 stapled booklet with some handling, light wear to the covers, and a slightly wrinkled pages near the top gutter throughout. A rare and important document on the state of critical and creative ideas about international visual design and typography.
