Shigeo Fukuda Exhibition Catalog w/ Poster [Inscribed by Shigeo Fukuda to Lou Dorfsman]

Shigeo Fukuda Exhibition edited by Fukuda, 1987. Yomiuri Shimbun, Tokyo, Japan. 10.75 x 10.75, pp. 102 with Japanese text only. Designed by Shigeo Fukuda. This copy is inscribed and dated by Shigeo Fukuda to Lou Dorfsman with black marker on the front free end paper: “Lou Dorfsman Son / Shigeo Fukuda. — 1987. 6. 24. Tokyo.” with Fukuda’s original line drawing illusion of male and female legs.

This uncommon Japanese exhibition catalog features several introductory texts (one by Fukuda), an exhibition summary and a checklist of works. Heavily illustrated throughout with (55) black and white and color illustrative and photographic works (mostly one per page) and a bound-in folded poster (20 x 14.25).

Shigeo Fukuda (1932–2009) is celebrated for his graphic art and poster design featuring optical illusions which expressed witty and complex ideas with simplicity; revealing his interests with minimalist and universal principles. He was the first Japanese designer to be inducted into the Art Director’s Club Hall of Fame and once told Idea magazine: “I believe that in design, 30 percent dignity, 20 percent beauty and 50 percent absurdity are necessary.”

A very good softcover exhibition catalog with light wear along the cover and interior page corners and a long vertical crease on the back cover. Hard to find in the United States.
